This concept the 'VAV fan coil' was first introduced to the Market place by Ability Projects using there patented Matrix product, however at least one other manufacturer now offers an alternative albeit lacking the special plenum Abilities forerunner features.
What's next for the humble fan coil unit? Now the VAV fan coil unit is in the process of changing that, in time the way whole building are specificied will change, presently the specs are written around single speed fan coils, or at best three speed. Imagine writing "with the building at plus or minus 3 degrees of set point the system should be at NR30, rising to a maximum of NR38 should the temperature rise above or below this threshold". This is completely possible with technology today, don't forget that with the drop in noise, also comes massive energy savings, not to mention maintenance savings.
